Spring

Snippet of "Spring." The trout lily is an original pen & ink illustration I did for a small by might preserve in northeastern Illinois. The other elements seen are dried leaves and some wonderful papers.

Desperate for a release from the gray, bitter winters in the midwest, I made this piece imagining the return of spring.

This piece does exactly what I had hoped. It captures the joyful exuberance of spring's welcome return.

The fresh new green of emerging plants is a vibrant color best appreciated with the sunlight shining in from behind. I made the pen & ink illustration of the trout lily, Erythronium americanum, a number of years ago to promote a small hidden nature preserve in northeastern Illinois. The trout lily is a harbinger of spring, it was a perfect addition to this piece. I chose the tissue papers and reclaimed wrapping papers because of their joyful vibrance. Flower petals and leaves from my dried flower collection dance across the surface of this piece. Hints of metallic gold flash and play in the light throughout the day.

The textures and soft edges of the torn paper will make you want to be outdoors to welcome spring's return yourself - or serve as a perfect stand-in until you can get outside yourself.

    Love:
    looking at art,
    talking about art,
    making art,
    writing about art,
    hearing about art.

I am so very fortunate to have a dear friend who is a rabid lover of art like me.

During the cold winter months, we travel every other week in search of art.

There are art shows everywhere if you look - and we do.

Every local library has an art show, most towns have small art centers or at least one art gallery.

    A small college?
You are most likely in luck, there will be a small gallery showcasing an artist's or a group of artist's labors of love and passion.

Many local restaurants and coffee shops regularly hang the work of local artists.

All you need to do is be on the lookout.

You will be richly rewarded by spending some time inside an artist's vision or view of the world.

We dig around online to find shows somewhere within 100 miles of where we both live - we live 38 miles from each other.

After some back and forth, make our decision and point our cars at our destination.

We have yet to be disappointed.

Mostly we come away from our bi-weekly adventures filled with awe and profound gratitude that we are able to have these experiences.
